Indiana First Steps is starting something newThis new approach is calledFamily Guided Routines-Based Intervention (FGRBI)
The termFamily Guided means that you, the family, makes the decisions.You know your child better than anyone else.
The term Routines-Basedmeans that teaching children works best when it happens during the normal things that happen every day, like mealtime, dressing time, or outdoor play.
FGRBI approach to Early Intervention
Focuses on what is important to you
•Letsyou lead and providers “coach” by offering information and suggestions
•Helps you to work on new skills with your child during everyday routines
What does a home visit with FGRBI look like?
You may be wondering...
Using everyday routines is more than coming to your home to work with your child.
Children learn best with familiar people while they are doing meaningful, everyday things like:
•Getting dressed
•Eating a snack
•Playing ball
Instead of bringing special toys and materials to your home, you and the provider will teach your child using your family’s objects and toys.
You will choose routines and activities you believe are best to teach your child with your provider’s support.
Your role as the family
•Is to help your child grow and develop.
•You know your child and your routines better than anyone else, but the provider is there to support you.
You will support your child To learn while you do what you always do with your family during everyday routines and ineverydayplaces.
Your FirstStepsProvider’s roleis to help you teach your childAs a coach, your provider will:•Listen to your concerns
•Share information
•Offer suggestions about ways to help your child learn
To give your child regular practice
Your provider will help you choose routines and activities that are:
•Important
•Happen often
•Are comfortable for you and your family
By working together,
•Your child will have lots of practice to learn throughout the day, every day, not just during therapy sessions.
•Your child’s skills will develop, and your comfort and confidence in supporting your child’s development will grow.
