Structured Teaching Based on the TEACCH® Philosophy

Structured Teaching Training

IRCA offers 2-day and 3-day Structured Teaching Training for staff and a 1-day Structured Teaching Training for Instructional Assistants. Trainings can be done during sequential days or spread out, such as 1 day every 2-4 weeks. These trainings take place within the school district.

Structured Teaching Training covers 4 elements of structured teaching:

  • Physical Structure
  • Schedules
  • Work Systems
  • Visual Structure of Materials

Additional areas that are addressed include:

  • Informal Assessment
  • Play & Leisure
  • Social Skills
  • Emotional Regulation
  • Behavior

About Amy Gaffney, M.A., CCC-SLP, Educational Consultant

Amy is an Educational Consultant, a TEACCH® Certified Advanced Consultant, and a Speech-Language Pathologist with the Indiana Resource Center for Autism, Indiana Institute on Disability and Community at Indiana University. Amy received her Master’s Degree from the University of Kansas, where she was part of the Communication and Autism Project. She received her TEACCH® Certification from the TEACCH® Program at the University of North Carolina. She has experience working with young children, school-age children, adolescents, and young adults. She has worked in a variety of settings, including in-home, public and private schools, and a private clinic. Amy gives presentations and trainings nationally and internationally, including topics related to structured teaching, executive functioning, communication, social cognition, and other evidence-based practices. Amy is co-author of “A Recipe for Student Success.”in Life After Lockdown: Resetting Perceptions of Autism and “Structure/Modifications” in Comprehensive Autism Planning System.
